No matter which way you deal the cards, there’s one reality that we all have to accept: there’s only one Earth.
With Earth Day being in April, the importance of keeping our one and only planet clean and healthy is at the forefront of most people’s minds. Unfortunately, it might seem like there’s nothing you can do to fix some of the damage that’s been done. After all, the projections that are given on the state of our planet can be scary ones, and you’re just one person!
Thankfully, you have a lot more power than you probably realize. Apart from writing your local politicians about important environmental issues, there are loads of tangible things that you can do right now!
At New Hamburg Thrift, we have made a commitment to repurposing and recycling whatever we can if we cannot use what comes into our store. We have volunteers who fix broken items, make things like rugs and fat corners for quilting, and make entirely new items from items that can’t be sold. This allows us to take something that would otherwise be taking up space in a landfill and give it a new purpose and new value.
And, when we can’t repurpose an item, we have several methods of recycling items, including electronic recycling, scrap metal recycling, and paper recycling. All of these methods are more reliable than sending items out to a general recycling centre, and we can know that the items sent out have a better fate than most things in a landfill.
So, that leads us back to the original question: what exactly can you do?
Let your old items be reused, repurposed, or recycled by dropping them off at New Hamburg Thrift Centre! Your items will end up in much better places than they would be if they were simply thrown out or left to clutter up your home, so you can count on the fact that you will have done something to help the fight against climate change.
And, if you want to do even more than that, come check out the store for volunteering opportunities! We always need people to help us to make our dream of a waste-free centre a reality!
